Alt Legal Sponsors Survey Revealing Key Insights into Trademark Administrators’ Compensation

November 25, 2024

New York, November 25, 2024 – Alt Legal, Inc., a leader in automated trademark docketing software, has sponsored and published a groundbreaking salary survey for trademark administrators (TMAs). The report, “Benchmarking Trademark Administrators’ Salaries,” provides the most detailed salary insights available for non-attorney professionals in the trademark industry. Inspired by feedback from members of the Trademark Administrators’ Exchange (TMAE)—a free online community for trademark and intellectual property (IP) professionals—this initiative reflects Alt Legal’s commitment to supporting TMAs through financial and operational backing of the TMAE.

About the Survey

The survey originated from TMAE members’ expressed need for robust compensation data to support salary negotiations. In prior years, TMAE volunteers independently created surveys, compiled data, and published benchmarking reports.

This year, Bri Van Til, Head of Community at TMAE, collaborated with TMAE members to refine the survey’s focus. Alt Legal sponsored the project, engaging a survey data expert to analyze the results and produce an accessible report. The findings empower TMAs to evaluate their compensation relative to peers based on organization size, location, education, seniority, and job responsibilities.

“Trademark administrators are integral to their organizations,” said Van Til. “This data ensures their contributions are reflected in fair compensation packages while providing organizations with reliable benchmarks for setting salaries.”

Key Insights

The survey explored how factors such as experience, location, job responsibilities, gender, and race influence compensation. By examining these variables collectively, the report offers TMAs actionable insights to inform career decisions.

Key findings include:

  • Wide salary range: TMAs’ base salaries range from $36,000 to $360,000, with an average of $105,845 in the U.S.
  • Bonuses: Over 80% of TMAs receive bonuses, averaging $5,000 annually.
  • Conference funding gaps: Only 57% of organizations fully fund conference attendance, while 15% of respondents self-fund entirely, including using PTO.

Survey’s Immediate Impact

Alt Legal CEO Nehal Madhani previewed the survey results during a recent workshop co-hosted with TMAE member Kara Fielder. Madhani highlighted the survey’s tangible benefits, noting, “Even before the report’s full release, its impact was evident. One TMA leveraged the preliminary data to secure a 30% salary increase. This result underscores the value of transparent, accurate compensation benchmarks for the TMA community.”
